Lake Albert

Lake Albert (also called Albert Lake) is named after Colonel John James Abert and lies in Lake County, Oregon in the center of the state near the California boarder. Lake Albert is the only alkali lake in Oregon. The lake is fed by the Chewaucan River and it has no outlet. The lake is so alkaline that no fish live in the lake and only brine shrimp can survive. Recently the lake has been shrinking unexplainably and scientists are still trying to figure out why.
This shot was actually taken from a moving vehicle, which was a rather difficult endeavor. It was a cold winter day just after Christmas and my wife was driving on our way back to California when we came around the bend and I saw this perfect shot with Albert Rim on the left and the sun creating a Rembrandt Lighting effect off the water. There was no time to stop the car and set up the camera or the magnificent lighting naturally caused by the sun streaming through the clouds would have been lost so I snapped the picture with the vehicle moving and was able to capture the scene just before the clouds moved in front of the sun again. That’s the way it goes with photography, sometimes the best shots are those that you could never be prepared for.
